Mission
Greek Women in STEM seeks to highlight and support the work of Greek women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine) and all related fields. This is done through three axes:
1. interviews with the scientists themselves
2. articles on topics related to scientific news and advancements with
reference to the contribution of Greek researchers and scientists
3. a mentoring program.
Past/Present:
The journalistic / educational page Greek Women in STEM was launched by Dr. Lina Ntokou in 2019. The site has attracted volunteer members who make up the writing and organizing team. At the same time, we run a mentoring program, acting as a liaison
between volunteer mentors and people seeking mentorship. Everyone involved is an adult and our events at schools take place only after careful consultation with teachers and authorities in the respective institutions.
Greek Women in STEM in numbers:
1. Our team consists of 15 members, 10 of whom are PhDs while 4 are PhD candidates.
2. So far, we have been invited by 4 educational institutions for scientific seminars and career issues.
3. We collaborate with 5 other voluntary organizations.
4. We have been invited by the Greek press regarding our work. Specifically, from the first and second program of ERT, in Athens 984, in ViMagazino and in the page “generation woman”.
5. Since June 2020 when we started the mentoring program until now we have 40 mentors in 10 countries worldwide.
Future:
1. Thanks to our constantly evolving activities and responding to the needs of the scientific and non-scientific community, we will organize a series of training seminars at universities or other academic and non-academic venues in order to promote research and mentorship for the professional career of young people.
2. We are also planning the first international symposium Women+ in October 2021. Specifically, REAL Science, the Greek Girls Code, the Lean In Hellas Women In Tech and the Greek Women in STEM
are the organizing teams for this virtual conference.
3. Because the field of science communication does not exist in an organized way in Greece, we are structuring an internship program in collaboration with universities through which students will learn how to write, what does science communication mean and more. This program will be a link between journalism and science.
4. Last, the company Tenebra Studios, the largest gaming company in Greece has invited us to the gaming exhibition they organize while the STEM center of Anatolia Thessaloniki has open cooperation with us for seminars and actions in the future.
